A cane is a solid rod of glass, typically 4 to 8 millimeters in diameter and 10 to 30 centimeters long, made by fusing colored glass rods together and drawing them down while hot. The result is a thin, patterned cross-section that runs the entire length of the rod. When sliced transversely into wafers or melted into a larger glass mass, the cane's pattern becomes visible on the final piece, allowing flameworkers to introduce detailed imagery and color without hand-painting.
Canes are made by bundling parallel glass rods of different colors around a central core, fusing the bundle in a kiln, then stretching it lengthwise while still plastic. A bundle an inch thick can be drawn down to cane diameter, multiplying the cross-sectional pattern. Complex patterns such as florals, portraits, or geometric motifs arise from the initial arrangement. Borosilicate and soda-lime canes are both common, each suited to different working temperatures and end-use applications.
Working with cane in flamework
A flameworker heats a cane segment in the flame until it begins to soften, then either fuses it directly into molten glass or slices it thin and incorporates the slices as inlay. The cane must be compatible in thermal expansion with the host glass, or the finished piece will crack during cooling. Canes are often stacked and fused together before use, building up larger patterned elements from smaller units.
The term cane derives from its resemblance to a walking cane or walking stick, both long and slender. In glassmaking, it has also meant the long paddle used to stir molten glass in a furnace, but that usage is archaic. Modern cane as a material is essential to the contemporary lampworking and furnace glasswork trades, where pattern complexity and rapid production favor pre-made decorative glass stock over time-intensive hand-coloring techniques.
