A gadget is a spring-loaded clip mounted on the end of a punty, the iron rod used to hold a piece of glass during the finishing stages of glassblowing. Its job is to grip the foot of the vessel, the base that will sit on a table, without marring it with a mark. The clip allows finishers to work the rim and bowl of the piece while it is still hot and malleable, then transfer it to the annealing oven without leaving behind a bullion, the rough glass nodule that forms where the punty breaks free.
The gadget consists of two or more metal arms bent into a U shape, held under tension by a spring so that they press against the glass foot from opposite sides. The arms are lined with a refractory material, often ceramic fibre or graphite-coated asbestos, to prevent thermal shock and adhesion. When the glassmaker opens the clip, the foot can be released cleanly. The device must balance grip strength against glass fragility, particularly for thin-walled or sculptural forms where the foot is delicate.
Variants exist for different foot diameters and vessel shapes. Some gadgets are fixed, others adjustable by means of a screw or lever that alters spring tension. Older designs used simple metal bands; modern versions use quick-release mechanisms that allow faster work cycles. The size and material of the grip pads are customized to suit whether the glassmaker is handling lead crystal, borosilicate, or soda-lime glass, each of which has different thermal and physical properties.
The term itself is old glassmaking slang, its origin obscure but likely rooted in the notion of a clever mechanical gadget or device. In the trade, it is used almost exclusively in the context of punty work and finishing. A poorly maintained gadget, with worn pads or a weak spring, creates the very defect it is meant to prevent: marks, chills, or stress fractures on the foot. Replacement pads and springs are consumables in a busy glass workshop.
The gadget sits at the boundary between blowing and cold working. Once the vessel is complete and cooled, the foot is ground, polished, or drilled as needed. But the gadget's job is done in heat, in the narrow window before annealing when the glass is still workable but cooling rapidly. A glassmaker's skill with the gadget determines whether a finished piece bears invisible finishing marks or looks unmarked from every angle.
