A candroy was a specialized machine used in cotton textile finishing to unwind and spread cloth evenly across its full width before block or roller printing. The device held a roll of woven cotton fabric and gradually released it under controlled tension, allowing operators to lay it flat and aligned on a table or frame for the printing process. Without this step, wrinkles, creases, or uneven tension in the cloth would cause ink to apply unevenly and waste expensive pattern plates.

The machine consisted of a horizontal spindle or roller mounted above a work table, fitted with adjustable guides and tension wheels to manage the cloth width. As the operator cranked or powered the mechanism, the fabric unwound smoothly, and the width could be regulated using side bars or selvedge guides. Older models operated by hand; later versions used steam or mechanical drive. The name likely derives from the French candré, meaning creased or ridged, reflecting the problem it solved.

Candroys saw their heaviest use from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s, when hand-block and early cylinder printing dominated British and continental cotton mills. The machine was especially common in Lancashire and in French and Swiss print works, where fine cotton goods required precise preparation. As continuous automatic printing lines and wider looms became standard in the mid-twentieth century, dedicated candroys fell out of use; modern spreading and printing equipment combined these steps more efficiently.

The candroy occupied a middle ground between simple hand-stretching and fully automated systems. Operators needed skill to manage tension, prevent creasing, and hold width without distorting the weave. A poorly spread cloth could jam or slip during printing, damaging blocks or causing dye waste. The device represented a common pattern in textile mechanization: a single, manual task elevated into a specialized machine to guarantee consistency on expensive materials.
