A typical automotive battery weighs 30 to 50 pounds and occupies a case roughly 10 inches long, 6 inches wide, and 7 inches tall, though dimensions vary by vehicle platform and battery group size.
The internal structure consists of lead dioxide (positive) and sponge lead (negative) plates submerged in sulfuric acid electrolyte. When the starter switch closes, current flows from the battery through the starter motor at rates often exceeding 200 amperes, creating the torque needed to crank the engine. Once the engine fires and the alternator begins rotating, it takes over electrical generation and begins recharging the battery. Modern batteries are designed to sustain 400 to 600 complete charge-discharge cycles before capacity degrades below useful levels, typically three to five years of normal service.
Battery group sizes (BCI designations like 24F, 35, 51, 65) standardize terminal placement and case dimensions within the industry, ensuring mechanical and electrical compatibility. Cold cranking amperes (CCA) rating measures how many amps the battery can deliver for 30 seconds at 0 degrees Fahrenheit before voltage drops below 7.2 volts; modern vehicles often require 400 to 800 CCA depending on engine displacement and climate. Reserve capacity, measured in minutes, indicates how long the battery alone can power essential systems if the alternator fails. Some vehicles use 24-volt systems, particularly in commercial trucks and heavy equipment, but 12-volt remains standard in automotive applications.
Failure modes include sulfation (irreversible lead sulfate crystal buildup), internal plate shedding from vibration, and electrolyte loss through evaporation or leakage. Chronic undercharging from short-trip driving or electrical parasitic drains can shorten lifespan. Corrosion of the lead terminals and cable connectors creates resistance and poor current delivery, a common field problem that can be mistaken for battery failure when actually only the connection needs cleaning.
The term battery derives from the military formation, adopted because scientists observed that multiple electrical cells arranged in series resembled soldiers ranked in a battery. Car batteries became standardized components once internal combustion engines replaced hand-crank starting methods in the 1920s. Today the lead-acid chemistry remains dominant because of low cost, proven reliability, high power density at cold temperatures, and established recycling infrastructure; roughly 99 percent of automotive batteries in developed markets are collected and reprocessed.
