A carpenter's pencil is a woodworking marking tool with an oval or rectangular cross-section, typically 7 to 8 millimeters thick and about 19 centimeters long. Unlike round pencils, its flat profile resists rolling off worktables, lumber piles, and inclined surfaces, a practical advantage on active job sites. The core uses softer graphite, typically graded HB or B, allowing visible marks on rough, untreated wood and concrete where standard pencil lead leaves no trace.

The flat geometry serves a second function: it presents a wider marking edge when held at a shallow angle, useful for scoring cut lines across board faces and edges where precision matters. Carpenters often sharpen the point to a chisel edge using a utility knife or pencil sharpener, creating a thin, controlled line rather than the rounded tip a standard sharpener produces. This edge can be refreshed mid-project without requiring a new pencil.

Material and construction variants

Carpenter's pencils come in wood-cased versions, where the wood is typically incense cedar or similar softwood, and mechanical versions with replaceable lead cartridges. The wooden type remains standard on sites because the wood body itself serves as a straightedge for short measurements and as a layout guide when positioned against a square. Wood-cased versions withstand the impact and abrasion of site conditions better than mechanical pencils.

Harder grades (HB or H) mark on oily or wet wood; softer grades (B or 2B) work on dry wood and leave darker lines. Many carpenters keep both grades on hand: the harder pencil for layout on freshly cut lumber, the softer for marking on finished surfaces or aged wood. Some brands offer dual-color versions with different graphite grades on opposite flat faces.

The name itself reflects the tool's origin in hand carpentry, though its use extends across framing, cabinetry, concrete finishing, and masonry. Site workers prefer them over ball-point pens because graphite leaves no pressure mark on adjacent surfaces and the mark can be sanded away if corrected before construction proceeds. On rough-sawn timber or concrete block, a round pencil often skips and fails to deposit visible graphite; the carpenter's pencil's geometry and softer lead overcome this consistently.
