Spalting is the visible darkening, streaking, or discoloration of wood caused by fungal growth, typically occurring in logs or freshly felled timber. Unlike rot, which destroys the wood structure, spalting creates patterns that woodworkers value aesthetically: dark lines (often black or deep brown), zones of uniform color, or marbled effects across the grain. The fungi responsible are mostly non-wood-decay species that colonize the sapwood before heartwood forms, leaving structural integrity intact even as they radically alter appearance.
The characteristic black lines in spalted wood, called zone lines or spalting lines, form where two competing fungal colonies meet and create a chemical boundary. These lines can run perpendicular to the grain, creating dramatic linear patterns, or follow wood ray structure. The coloration comes from melanin and other pigments the fungi produce as metabolic byproducts. Different fungal species and wood species yield different colors: blacks, grays, reds, oranges, and blues appear in various spalted timbers. The process is unpredictable; identical conditions rarely produce identical results, which is why spalted wood commands premium prices.
Spalting typically develops over weeks to months in freshly cut logs stored in humid conditions, particularly in spring and early summer when fungal spore loads are high and moisture is abundant. The sapwood must be exposed; completely sealed or fully dried logs will not spalt. Woodworkers sometimes accelerate spalting by leaving logs partially buried, partially exposed, or stacked outdoors. However, advanced spalting can eventually progress to actual decay, which weakens the wood and makes it unusable. The challenge is harvesting spalted logs at the right moment: attractive patterns established, but decay not yet advanced enough to compromise mechanical properties.
Spalted wood is harder and more brittle than unspalted timber of the same species because fungal penetration changes the wood structure and increases density in some zones. Turning and small items such as boxes exploit spalting's visual drama, while spalted lumber for furniture requires careful grain assessment because the weakened zones are prone to checking and splitting. The fungal material itself is not toxic to most workers, but some individuals experience respiratory irritation from spore dust during machining; adequate dust collection is essential. Spalted wood also tends to dull cutting tools faster due to its altered density.
The term spalting has Germanic roots and appears in woodworking literature from at least the mid-20th century, though spalted wood has been used much longer. Modern woodworkers actively seek spalted blanks, burls, and logs, and spalted wood now commands prices two to five times higher than clear stock of the same species. The uncertainty of the spalting process and the finite supply of naturally spalted timber keep demand high and make spalted pieces valued as one-of-a-kind work rather than commodity stock.
