A rooter is a rotary cutting tool, typically a tungsten carbide or high-speed steel bit, mounted in a router spindle to cut narrow, precise grooves into wood. The bit's cutting edges are ground at specific angles to produce clean walls and defined depths, ranging from shallow decorative lines to functional channels for inlay, edge banding, or joinery. The groove widths commonly range from 1/16 inch to 1/2 inch, and the tool can work on both cross-grain and with-grain surfaces when feed rate and spindle speed are matched correctly.
Rooters exist in several forms determined by their intended cut profile. Straight rooters have parallel flutes running the length of the cutting edges and produce rectangular-bottomed grooves. V-grooveers angle the cutting edges inward to form pointed channels used for decorative work and chamfering. Core-box rooters have a radius cut into the bottom of the groove, producing a semi-circular profile suited to edge treatments and panel raising. Round-nose rooters serve similar purposes but with a full hemispherical profile. Specialty bits like ogee, roundover, and edge-forming rooters blur the line between groove-cutting and molding tools.
Common problems in use
Tearout at the exit side of the cut is the most frequent complaint, especially when routing cross-grain on figured hardwoods. This occurs when the trailing edge of the bit lifts wood fibers instead of severing them cleanly. A backup board clamped to the underside reduces this, as does climb-feeding into the wood grain at controlled speeds, though climb-feeding demands careful hand placement and is not suited to hand-held routing. Feed rate that is too fast will cause the bit to chatter and roughen the groove walls; too slow generates friction heat that can blacken the wood and dull the edges faster than normal.
The term rooter derives from the action of rooting out material, much as a hog roots soil. In earlier woodworking, similar narrow cuts were made with hand planes and chisels, a tedious process; the electric router made this operation faster and repeatable. Rooter bits are sold individually or in sets and are measured by their shank diameter, typically 1/4 inch or 1/2 inch, and cutting diameter. Carbide-edged bits cost significantly more than steel but hold their edge longer and handle production runs efficiently; they also tolerate the dust collection systems and slightly cooler running conditions of industrial routers better than high-speed steel does.
Rooter work sits between simple edge profiling and complex joinery in the woodshop hierarchy. Cabinet makers use rooters for decorative line work on face frames; furniture builders employ them for joinery channels; flooring mills use them to cut grooves for tongue-and-groove assembly. The tool remains essential in both hand-held router work for one-offs and in stationary table routers or CNC machines where consistency and speed matter.
