ceiling: the wooden skin between hull and cargo hold
In shipbuilding, ceiling is the interior planking that lines the inside of a ship's hull, running parallel to and separated from the outer hull planking by the frames. It forms the inner wall of the cargo hold, engine room, or other internal spaces, protecting the structural framing from moisture, impact, and the weight of stored goods. The gap between outer hull and ceiling creates an air space and drainage path critical to the vessel's survival in rough seas.
Ceiling planks are typically laid fore and aft, running along the length of the ship, and are fastened to the frames with trunnels (wooden pegs) or bolts. The thickness and wood species depend on the vessel type and service: deep-sea cargo ships use thicker, more robust ceiling than fishing vessels. The planks must be sized to withstand stacking loads and the movement of cargo without splitting, and they must allow water to drain toward the bilges without pooling.
The space between matters
The gap itself, called the ceiling space or limber strake area, serves multiple functions. It allows bilge water to flow freely toward the pump suction rather than being trapped under loose ceiling planks, a condition that leads to rot, corrosion, and structural decay. Proper limber holes drilled in the frames maintain this drainage. Poor ceiling installation, or ceiling that warps and breaks, causes water to stand between hull and inner surface, accelerating deterioration of both.
The term "ceiling" survives from an era when most ships were wooden throughout. Modern steel vessels still have interior plating that performs the same protective and functional role as traditional wooden ceiling, though it is welded rather than fastened. The principle remains unchanged: the inner skin protects the structure and defines usable internal volume.
