A pendant is a short length of rope, wire, or chain that hangs vertically from a fixed point on a ship or in a shipyard, terminating in an eye or shackle where you attach a hook, block, or tackle. It serves as the direct mechanical link between the load and the overhead structure, whether that is a davit, crane hook, or yard boom. The pendant bears the full weight of whatever you are hoisting and must be sized and maintained accordingly.
Pendants come in two main forms: natural fiber rope (traditionally manila or hemp, now less common) and wire rope, typically 6x19 or 8x19 construction with a minimum breaking strength well above the anticipated working load. In modern practice, synthetic fiber (polyester or nylon) pendants are also used, though wire remains standard in heavy industrial rigging because it resists abrasion and handling damage better than organic materials. Chain pendants appear in older vessels and where corrosion resistance is critical, though they are heavier and less flexible.
Length matters. A pendant is deliberately short, usually 2 to 6 feet, long enough to clear obstacles and distribute load forces, but short enough to keep the center of gravity low and the rigging stable. Too long a pendant creates pendulum effects during hoisting; too short and you cannot attach proper tackle or cannot position the load safely. The terminal end is either whipped and spliced to form a permanent eye, or fitted with a clevis or shackle for quick-disconnect rigging.
Failure modes and inspection
Pendants fail when they are overloaded, abraded against sharp edges, or corroded internally. Wire rope pendants deteriorate at the core due to metal fatigue and rust, making visual inspection unreliable; periodic proof-loading or replacement on a schedule is standard practice. Synthetic fiber pendants degrade under UV exposure and heat, and rope pendants rot from moisture and salt spray. Chafing at the attachment point is the commonest cause of premature failure in all types.
The term 'pendant' derives from the Latin 'pendere', to hang, and is used interchangeably with 'pennant' in maritime contexts, though 'pendant' is preferred in rigging terminology to distinguish the load-bearing rope from a signal pennant. In shipyard vocabulary, a pendant is a consumable item; every crane operator and rigger knows that a failed pendant means a dropped load, and a dropped load means serious injury or death. Inspection tags and replacement certificates are kept on file for every working pendant in service.
