whip: a single-block tackle that doubles your pulling force

A whip is a simple tackle consisting of one movable block and one fixed block, arranged so that a single rope passes through both. The fixed block is secured to a solid point, the movable block hangs from the load, and pulling one end of the rope lifts the load while the other end is made fast. This arrangement delivers a mechanical advantage of 2:1, meaning you exert half the force needed to lift the load directly, though you pull twice the length of rope.

The whip appears in two practical configurations in shipyard work. In the most common form, the fixed block is bolted or shackled to a beam or gantry, the movable block is attached to the item being hoisted, and the hauling part hangs down for manual or mechanical pulling. In the variant used on deck or in rigging, the fixed block may be secured overhead and the whip used to hoist stores, spars, or machinery components. Modern shipyards often rig whips with wire rope rather than natural fiber, and the blocks themselves are steel or cast iron rather than wooden.

Why it matters in practice

The whip's true value lies not in the force advantage alone, but in control and speed. A 2-ton component lifted by a whip requires only 1 ton of pull, but that pull travels twice as fast as the load rises. This means shorter hoisting times and less strain on human crews or older winch machinery. The single moving block also creates less friction and complexity than more elaborate tackle arrangements, making the whip reliable in shipyard environments where rope may be wet, fouled with scale, or poorly maintained.

Common problems arise from improper sheave alignment and worn grooves in the blocks. If the fixed and movable blocks are not vertically aligned, the rope will jam or fray under load. The sheave, or pulley wheel, can develop flat spots from rust or impact, causing the rope to slip and lose efficiency. A worn whip produces jerky, dangerous hoisting rather than smooth movement.

The term whip, somewhat obscure to outsiders, reflects the sharp cracking motion of the rope as it moves through the blocks under load, particularly in older rigging systems. Shipyard workers still distinguish a whip from other tackles like the luff (which uses two movable blocks for greater advantage but more complexity) and the simple fixed block or snatch block, which have no mechanical advantage at all. The whip remains standard in quick-rigging situations where a 2:1 advantage is sufficient and speed of setup matters.
