CEO

Acronym of current engine option.

CEO: the engine choice you locked in at order time

In aircraft maintenance records and parts ordering, CEO stands for current engine option and refers to the specific engine model that was installed on an aircraft at the time of manufacture. When an airframe leaves the factory, it arrives with one of several possible engine types depending on what the customer ordered and what was available; that installed engine becomes the CEO for all subsequent maintenance and logistical purposes.

The CEO designation matters because airlines and maintenance shops need to know exactly which engine sits in each nacelle. Two identical airframes can carry different engines, so the CEO goes into the aircraft type certificate data and maintenance manuals. Part numbers, service bulletins, overhaul intervals, and fuel system specifications all depend on which engine is installed. Confusing the CEO can lead to installing incompatible parts or missing critical service requirements.

Airlines sometimes upgrade engines mid-service life, replacing the original with a newer or more efficient variant. When this happens, the aircraft retains its original CEO in the permanent records, but maintenance documentation must reflect both the historical engine and the current installation. This distinction affects warranty coverage, parts availability, and manufacturer support.

The acronym lives in maintenance management systems, parts catalogs, and engineering change orders. It is one of several engine-related data points: the original engine option (OEO) may differ from the CEO if an engine swap occurred, and the service engine option (SEO) sometimes refers to the model used for replacement or repair. In practice, maintenance technicians and planners consult the CEO before ordering time-controlled parts or scheduling major inspection work.
