chemigation: chemicals delivered through water lines

Chemigation is the practice of injecting pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, or soluble fertilizers into an irrigation system so that the chemical is distributed across a field along with the water. Instead of making separate passes with a sprayer, the farmer uses the existing irrigation infrastructure, whether drip lines, sprinklers, or flood systems, as the delivery mechanism. This method can cover large areas uniformly and reduce labour and fuel costs compared to conventional ground or aerial application.

The setup requires a chemical injector, usually a positive-displacement pump, installed between the chemical tank and the main irrigation line. The injector meter doses the chemical proportionally to water flow rate, so concentration stays consistent even if water pressure or volume fluctuates. Most systems include a check valve to prevent backflow of chemicals into the source water supply, which is a legal requirement in most jurisdictions. The chemical must be fully soluble or remain in suspension without clogging emitters or nozzles.

Where chemigation works and where it fails

Chemigation works best with drip irrigation, centre pivots, and solid-set sprinkler systems where water coverage is already predictable and even. It is less suitable for flood or furrow irrigation in uneven terrain, where water distribution is already poor. The method requires careful calibration: too little chemical wastes the effort, and too much can burn foliage, poison soil, or contaminate groundwater. Some chemicals degrade rapidly in water or are too viscous to inject cleanly; surfactants, oils, and suspension concentrates often cannot be applied this way without specialized equipment.

The term emerged in the 1970s as irrigation became more automated and as the farm chemical industry developed injectable formulations. It combines chemical with irrigation, a direct description of the dual system. Chemigation has been strictly regulated in most countries since the 1980s because of the risk of contaminating drinking-water aquifers if injection backflow occurs. Many regions now require licensed applicators, backflow prevention devices, and written records of every chemigation event.

Chemigation saves time and fuel on large operations, but it demands discipline. The system must be flushed before and after each chemical injection, filters must be monitored for blockages, and the chemical-to-water ratio must be verified by calculation or flow meter. A single miscalibration or equipment failure can waste chemical, damage the crop, or violate environmental law. For this reason, many farmers use it only for fertilizer application, where the stakes are lower than with pesticides.
