one-way: ploughing with a disc harrow

To one-way is to work the soil with a disc harrow, turning it over and fragmenting it while burying surface vegetation and weeds. The implement consists of a series of concave steel discs, typically 16 to 24 inches in diameter, mounted on a shaft at an angle to the direction of travel. As the discs roll through the soil, they cut, lift, and invert it in a single pass, creating a tilth suitable for seeding.

The one-way harrow differs from a conventional tandem disc harrow in that all discs are angled the same direction, rather than arranged in opposing gangs. This produces a pronounced soil ridge and a more uniform one-directional turnover. The name comes directly from this unidirectional action: soil moves only one way across the field. Depth is controlled by weight on the frame and by adjustable scrapers that keep discs clean of packed soil.

One-waying is standard preparation in cereal and row-crop farming, particularly on land that has stubble or heavy weed pressure. The operation typically occurs after harvest in autumn or spring before planting. Ground speed ranges from 4 to 8 miles per hour depending on soil moisture and texture; heavier clay soils demand slower speeds to avoid compaction behind the discs. Operators must maintain consistent depth and alignment to avoid leaving unworked strips.

Common failure modes

Disc blades wear and lose their curve, reducing cutting efficiency and forcing deeper settings to compensate. Bent or broken discs create furrows and uneven soil coverage. Bearing wear at the disc axles causes excessive play and premature blade failure. Most critically, one-waying wet soil can result in severe compaction and clodding, making subsequent seedbed preparation difficult and expensive.

The one-way harrow has largely been superseded in industrial agriculture by tine-based cultivators and mulch finishers, which preserve soil structure more effectively. However, the implement remains common in organic and conservation farming systems where mechanical weed control and topsoil turnover are priorities over speed and fuel efficiency.
