CIBER is a sounding rocket payload designed to measure the cosmic infrared background, the diffuse glow of infrared radiation that fills the universe. The instrument carries infrared detectors and optical systems aboard suborbital rockets launched from White Sands Missile Range, reaching altitudes above the atmosphere where Earth's thermal emissions no longer interfere with observations. Each flight lasts roughly 15 minutes in space before the instrument parachutes back to the desert floor for recovery and data download.

In aviation maintenance terms, CIBER presents specific challenges because it must survive rapid acceleration, vacuum exposure, extreme temperature swings, and hard landing impacts, then be promptly refurbished for the next flight. The instrument's detectors operate at cryogenic temperatures, requiring careful handling of helium cooling systems and thermal insulation. Technicians must verify optical alignment tolerances in the micrometers range and ensure all seals remain intact after each recovery, since even microscopic leaks compromise the vacuum integrity needed for infrared measurements.

Operational constraints and maintenance cycles

Because CIBER flies repeatedly on different rockets rather than remaining in orbit, its maintenance cycle differs sharply from satellite instruments. Ground crews inspect structural components for stress cracks, replace or recalibrate detectors as needed, and refill cryogenic tanks before each launch. The instrument's reusability demands robust mechanical design and thorough non-destructive testing between flights, adding significant maintenance labor compared to single-use space hardware.

CIBER flights occur infrequently, typically separated by months or years, so long-term storage and periodic preservation of sensitive electronics and optics falls to the maintenance team. Technicians must prevent oxidation of critical surfaces, maintain calibration records, and conduct functional tests to confirm readiness before integration with a new rocket.
