The navigation display is a cockpit instrument that synthesizes position, heading, and flight path data into a single visual format. On modern aircraft, it sits beside the primary flight display and presents a plan view (top-down perspective) of the aircraft's position relative to waypoints, airways, and terrain. Unlike older horizontal situation indicators, the ND integrates GPS, inertial navigation, and radio-based positioning to show real-time situational awareness, particularly during en route flight and approach phases.
The display refreshes typically between 2 and 4 times per second, depending on the avionics suite. Pilots can select different map scales, usually ranging from 10 nautical miles to 640 nautical miles from aircraft center, and rotate the display in heading-up mode (aircraft nose at top) or track-up mode (direction of motion at top). The ND overlays active flight plan data, including the current waypoint, next waypoint, and lateral and vertical deviations from the planned route. Many NDs also show weather radar returns, traffic advisory data, and airspace boundaries when those systems are available.
Common failure modes and maintenance concerns
Degradation of the ND often stems from loose coaxial connectors between the display unit and the avionics bus, leading to intermittent signal loss or display blanking. Liquid crystal displays on older NDs suffer backlight dimming after several thousand operating hours. Modern NDs use LCD or OLED technology with solid-state construction, but screen cracks from impact or vibration occasionally occur. Loss of position data upstream (from the inertial reference system or integrated modular avionics) will cause the ND to display a flag or revert to dead reckoning mode, making route monitoring unreliable.
The term 'navigation display' emerged in the 1980s as manufacturers moved away from the mechanical horizontal situation indicator toward electronic displays that could fuse multiple data sources. Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, and Garmin are primary suppliers for commercial and corporate aircraft. Regional turboprops often use simplified versions with fewer map layers, while large transports employ dual NDs with independent data feeds for redundancy.
During troubleshooting, maintenance technicians verify ND function through built-in test equipment (BITE) and compare displayed heading and position against known ground truth. A discrepancy between the ND and other instruments suggests either a failed ND unit or corrupted data from the navigation source. Recalibration or reprogramming is rarely required on failed units; replacement is the standard remedy.
