sheet: the rope that controls how a sail catches the wind

A sheet is a line (rope) attached to the clew, or lower aft corner, of a sail. Its job is to trim the sail by controlling the angle at which the sail meets the wind. By hauling in or easing out the sheet, a sailor adjusts how much the sail belly fills with air and how the sail's leading edge (the luff) relates to the wind direction. This is different from a halyard, which raises and lowers the sail itself.

Most sailing vessels carry multiple sheets, one for each sail. A mainsail has a mainsheet; a jib has a jibsheet. On larger boats, sheets may run through blocks and tackles to give mechanical advantage, since the forces can be substantial. A working jibsheet on a 40-foot cruiser under full wind might see tensions exceeding 1,000 pounds. Sheets are typically made from synthetic rope, most commonly polyester (Dacron) or polypropylene, chosen for durability and low stretch. Diameter ranges from half an inch on small dinghies to an inch or more on ocean racing yachts.

Sheet handling and failure modes

The sheet runs from the clew through a block at the rail (called a sheet traveler or fairlead on the boom) and then back to a cleat, winch, or hand position near the helm. On racing boats, sheets are routinely jibed, meaning they are eased on one side and trimmed on the other as the boat changes course. Damage occurs when sheets fray, chafe on fittings, or tangle in the standing rigging or boom. A sheet that catches when jibing can cause an accidental gybe, a dangerous loss of control where the boom swings violently across the boat. Old or sun-damaged sheets can break under load, particularly in a sudden gust or when the sail is sheeted in hard.

The word itself comes from Old English and originally meant a piece of cloth or fabric. In sail trim, it retained that association, though modern usage emphasizes the rope rather than its attachment to the sail. Confusion with 'sheeting', the material or the act of covering, is common among non-sailors.

In shipyard work and marine repair, sheets are regularly inspected for UV degradation, spliced or replaced at the attachment points, and resized when a boat is refitted with new sails. Proper sheet tension and angle are critical to sail shape and boat performance; even small adjustments affect pointing ability, speed, and stability. A well-maintained sheet that runs freely through its blocks is invisible to the crew; a fouled or worn one quickly becomes a problem.
