CMY: the three colors that build most printed images
CMY stands for cyan, magenta, and yellow, the three primary pigments used in subtractive color printing. When inks or dyes in these colors are layered on paper or substrate, they absorb (subtract) wavelengths of light to create the full range of hues visible to the human eye. Cyan absorbs red light, magenta absorbs green, and yellow absorbs blue. Together, they form the backbone of nearly all offset lithography, flexography, and gravure printing operations.
In practice, CMY inks are laid down in separate passes or from separate plates, each carrying its own color. A four-color press adds black (K) to make CMYK, which increases contrast and allows for deeper shadows and solid text without relying solely on CMY overlap. The black separation also reduces the amount of expensive colored ink needed to render dark tones. Most commercial printing worldwide uses CMYK rather than pure CMY.
The relationship between CMY and the RGB (red, green, blue) color spaces used in digital displays creates a core workflow problem in printing. A digital file designed in RGB must be converted to CMYK for press output, and this conversion always results in some color shift. Profiling, soft proofing, and careful ink and substrate selection become necessary to keep results close to the original. Different papers, varnishes, and ink formulations shift CMY reproduction significantly.
CMY registration, the precise alignment of each color layer, is critical. Misregistration by even 0.1 mm becomes visible to the naked eye as color fringing or halos around sharp edges and fine text. Modern presses use automated systems and registration marks to hold tolerance within 0.05 mm. Web-fed presses must manage registration across roll width and throughout the run as paper temperature and humidity change.
The choice to use CMY alone versus CMYK depends on the job. Simple graphics, labels, and packaging sometimes run three-color to save cost and press makeready time. Fashion and fine art printing may demand extended color sets (five, six, or more separations) to achieve hues that CMY or CMYK cannot reach. Pantone and specialty inks exist precisely because CMY gamut has hard limits.
