A pica stick is a rigid ruler, typically made of metal or wood, graduated in picas and points on one edge and usually inches on the other. It is the standard handheld measuring tool in printing and graphic design for checking dimensions, spacing, and alignment in type, layouts, and mechanical artwork before reproduction. The working length is usually 12 inches, which equals exactly 6 picas.
The pica is the fundamental unit of typographic measurement, defined as one-sixth of an inch, or 12 points. One point equals 1/72 of an inch. A pica stick's main scale divides into these units, allowing a printer or designer to measure type size, line length, margins, gutters, and space between elements with precision. The inch scale on the reverse allows conversion between typographic and decimal measurements, essential when working between traditional type specifications and metric or imperial print specifications.
Pica sticks remain standard in offset printing shops, design studios, and prepress departments despite digital workflows. They are used to verify that a mechanical layout, proof, or printed sample meets the original specification, and to measure existing printed materials when estimating reproduction or identifying type. Some versions include additional scales for special applications: half-picas, points only, or conversion tables. Flexible pica rulers exist but are less common, since rigidity allows accurate reading against type and ruled elements.
The tool's name derives directly from the pica unit itself, whose etymology reaches back through Latin and Greek to the notion of a magpie, or a mixed or varied collection. In medieval manuscript copying, the pica referred to a particular size of type or leading standard. The pica stick is indispensable in environments where tolerances matter: a 2-point error in line spacing or 6-point error in column width can ruin a layout or waste costly press time. Even in digital design, many practitioners keep a pica stick nearby to verify onscreen measurements against printed output and to check legacy printed materials.
