A coaling plant is a fixed structure built at locomotive depots and rail yards to transfer coal rapidly into the bunkers of steam locomotives. The plant typically consists of a tall steel framework (20 to 40 meters high) supporting a hopper at the top, beneath which a chute or spout directs coal downward into the locomotive's tender. The whole assembly was designed for speed and volume, allowing a locomotive to take on 10 to 15 tons of coal in 10 to 15 minutes, essential when locomotives turned around frequently on heavy traffic routes.

The most common design used a gravity-fed system: coal was dumped into the elevated hopper from wagons or trucks above, where it fell through a vertical chute into an open-topped wooden or steel bucket suspended on a counterbalanced arm. An operator would position this bucket over the tender and pull a release lever, sending the coal cascading down. Some plants used more sophisticated geared or chain-driven systems to raise the bucket mechanically; others employed a portable crane that could be swung to position the hopper over different track positions.

Depots serving heavy rail traffic built substantial plants capable of servicing multiple locomotives simultaneously. The most elaborate examples included multiple hoppers fed by conveyor belts from stockpiles, allowing three or four locomotives to coal at once. Smaller branch depots sometimes used hand-fed bins or gravity-drop systems where coal was loaded manually from ground level, trading speed for minimal capital cost. Rural and secondary lines often had no dedicated plant at all, and locomotives took on coal from ground-level piles using steam-powered cranes or simple derricks.

Coaling plants began to decline in the 1950s as diesel-electric locomotives replaced steam power on mainline services. Diesel locomotives carried fuel oil in integral tanks and did not require the rapid, repetitive transfer of bulk solid fuel that made coaling plants necessary. Most plants were dismantled or left to decay by the 1970s. A few heritage railways have restored working examples as part of authentic steam locomotive operations, and the skeletal remains of coaling plants still stand at many disused depots as monuments to the steam era.

The name reflects its single function: to deliver coal to locomotives at scale. The term is now historical; modern rail industry vocabulary does not include it because the infrastructure no longer exists in active service. For preservation societies and heritage railways, understanding how a coaling plant functioned remains essential to operating steam locomotives as they were historically maintained.
