In manufacturing, a coat is a thin continuous layer of material applied to a substrate to provide protection, finish, or functional properties. This is distinct from the garment definition and refers to the practice of covering wood, metal, plastic, concrete, or other surfaces with paint, varnish, powder, wax, oil, or specialized compounds. The coating adheres to the base material and hardens or sets to form a durable barrier.
Coatings serve several practical purposes. A protective coat prevents rust on steel, UV degradation on wood, or corrosion on aluminum. Decorative coats provide color and aesthetic finish. Functional coats add specific properties: anti-slip surfaces on stairs or ramps use specialized epoxy or polyurethane coats; chemical-resistant coatings protect concrete floors in factories; moisture barriers on OSB or plywood extend material life. The thickness varies from micrometers in powder coat applications to several millimeters in industrial epoxy systems.
Application and Materials
Coats are applied by spraying, brushing, rolling, dipping, or electrostatic powder application depending on the material type and end use. Common coating materials include water-based acrylics, solvent-based polyurethanes, epoxy resins, polyester, acrylic lacquers, and wax emulsions. Two-part epoxy systems require mixing activator and resin immediately before application. Some coats cure through air drying; others through heat, UV light, or chemical cross-linking. Drying time ranges from hours to days depending on formulation and environmental conditions.
Quality control focuses on film thickness, adhesion, hardness, and coverage uniformity. Poor adhesion causes flaking or peeling; insufficient thickness leaves areas unprotected; trapped moisture beneath the coat causes bubbling. Industrial specifications often call for dry film thickness (DFT) measurements using electronic gauges. Multiple coats may be required, with sanding or priming between layers to ensure proper mechanical bond.
The term derives from the garment, as the concept of covering translates directly from textile to surface protection. In manufacturing trades, workers speak of applying a coat of paint or varnish much as one dons outerwear, though the stakes involve material durability rather than personal warmth.
