Woven with the most basic textile weave, called plain weave.

Plain-woven fabric is made by passing a single weft thread over one warp thread and under the next, in an alternating pattern across the width. The next weft row reverses the pattern, so threads interlace at right angles with maximum frequency. This produces a balanced, tight weave with no floats, the longest unbroken run of thread is just one unit. The result is a fabric with roughly equal strength in both directions and high dimensional stability.

The mechanical properties of plain-woven cloth depend on yarn count, fiber type, and thread tension. A plain weave with 20 ends and 20 picks per inch in cotton will behave differently from 100x100 in the same fiber; tighter constructions offer greater abrasion resistance but are stiffer and harder to fold or drape. Synthetics like polyester or nylon in plain weave gain different qualities: polyester tends toward durability and wrinkle recovery, while nylon offers stretch and recovery under tension.

Where plain weave is preferred

Industries specify plain-woven fabric where structure and predictability matter more than finesse. Workwear textiles, canvas, cheesecloth, industrial filtration media, and many apparel fabrics use plain weave as the foundation. It is cheap to produce on any loom and requires no complex threading or heddle arrangements. Plain weave also accepts dyeing, coating, and finishing processes uniformly because the open weave structure allows penetration.

The main limitation is stiffness and reduced pliability compared to twill or satin, both of which create longer floats and softer hand. Plain-woven fabrics also show pronounced fraying at cut edges because individual threads cross only once before reaching the perimeter. In applications requiring crisp definition, such as tailoring, plain weave fabrics often receive finishing treatments or are cut with grain consideration to mask the effect.
