cofferwork: stone-faced rubble wall structure
Cofferwork is a masonry construction method in which a wall or structural element is built from rubble (broken stone, debris, or inferior material) and then faced on one or both sides with dressed stone or ashlar. The facing serves both protective and aesthetic purposes, concealing the inferior interior material while creating a weatherproof, finished surface. This technique has been used for centuries in fortifications, bridges, dams, and substantial buildings where cost control mattered but appearance or durability was required.
The rubble core typically consists of stone fragments, broken tile, brick, or waste material from the dressing of facing stones, often set in lime mortar with minimal precision. Stones are laid to pack reasonably tight but without the careful selection and jointing demanded of ashlar work. The facing stones, by contrast, are squared or semi-squared, laid in regular courses with even joint widths, and may be hammer-dressed or point-dressed to a consistent finish.
Structure and Variants
The quality of cofferwork depends on the care taken with the core and the thickness of the facing. A well-executed coffer wall may have a facing of 150 to 300 mm (6 to 12 inches) on each face, with rubble core perhaps 300 to 600 mm (12 to 24 inches) or more, depending on wall height and load. Some cofferwork uses larger selection of stones in the core, creating a semi-rubble fill; other work uses almost pure waste. The mortar bond between core and facing is critical; if the facing becomes isolated from the core by settlement or frost damage, it can spall or collapse.
Cofferwork is distinguished from solid ashlar, where the entire thickness is dressed stone, and from pure rubblework, where no finished facing is applied. It occupies a middle ground economically and structurally. It is also distinct from ashlar with rubble backup, a later industrial technique where a thin ashlar facing is supported by deliberate rubble core in a more organized scheme. Cofferwork often shows weathering and opening of joints differently on each face because the core and facing respond differently to moisture and frost.
The term itself likely derives from the architectural coffer, a recessed panel, though the connection is obscure; some sources suggest it may relate to the idea of contained or compartmented work. In modern practice, cofferwork is rarely specified for new construction, having been superseded by reinforced concrete, cavity walls, and standardized masonry units. However, many historic buildings rely on it, and understanding its behavior is essential when undertaking conservation or structural assessment of eighteenth and nineteenth century walls.
