Cold patch: fast pothole fix that won't last long
A cold patch is a bag of pre-mixed asphalt concrete that you tear open, pour into a pothole, and tamp down by hand or light machinery, typically with a pneumatic compactor or handheld tamper. It requires no heating and hardens through oxidation and compaction rather than cooling from a molten state. The material sits ready-mixed in paper or plastic bags, usually weighing 25 to 50 pounds, and needs only be pushed into the cavity and worked until reasonably firm.
Cold patch exists because hot asphalt (at 300 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit) cannot be properly placed in wet conditions or winter weather. Rain, frost, or damp surfaces prevent the hot mix from bonding correctly. Cold patch binder, typically a slow-set or cutback asphalt cement, flows and cures at ambient temperature, making it the only practical choice for emergency repairs when the weather makes traditional hot-mix paving impossible or when a pothole appears during winter shutdown.
The material performs poorly compared to properly installed hot asphalt. Cold patches typically last 6 to 18 months before raveling out, especially under heavy traffic. The binder oxidizes slowly, the aggregate particles move under wheel loads before full curing occurs, and water infiltration around the edges causes premature failure. Experienced road crews view cold patch as genuinely temporary, a way to make a hazardous hole safe until spring when proper hot-mix repair becomes possible.
Variations in practice
Cold patch comes in two main types: slow-set (SC) and rapid-set (RC), referring to the curing speed of the cutback binder. RC sets faster in cold weather but remains softer longer and tracks more easily onto surrounding pavement. Some crews pre-heat the hole slightly using propane torches or hot-air blowers to improve adhesion, though this requires extra equipment and time.The term encompasses both manual hand-pack repairs and small mechanical applications. A pothole 6 inches to 2 feet across typically needs 1 to 3 bags. Larger failures require either multiple patches or abandonment in favor of waiting for seasonal repair equipment. Quality control is minimal on cold patch work, which distinguishes it sharply from the plant-mixed, tested, and carefully placed hot asphalt used for permanent repairs.
