A sterling was a temporary or permanent enclosure built around bridge piers and other waterside structures to protect them from the erosive force of flowing water and wave action. Constructed by driving timber or wooden piles closely together into the riverbed or seabed, the sterling created a barrier that absorbed the impact of currents and prevented undermining of the foundation. The term is now obsolete, superseded by modern engineering terms like pile cap, cofferdam, and scour protection.
The sterling functioned as both a construction aid and a permanent defensive feature. During building, it allowed workers to keep the foundation dry by excluding water from the work area. Once the pier was complete, many sterlings remained in place as active protection, with the pile ring absorbing energy that would otherwise erode the riverbed around the structure's base. The piles were driven with sufficient force to reach firm ground or bedrock, and their spacing was tight enough to prevent debris or silt from washing through.
Construction and Materials
Sterlings were typically built from softwood poles, usually pine or fir, ranging from 6 to 12 inches in diameter. The piles were driven using pile hammers or drop weights, a labour-intensive process that could take weeks for larger structures. Some sterlings incorporated internal compartments or "coffers" that could be pumped dry, allowing workers to build brick or stone piers inside a dry workspace. Others remained open, functioning purely as hydrodynamic breaks.
The major problem with wooden sterlings was deterioration. Timber exposed to water undergoes rot from fungal attack, and immersed wood could be damaged by shipworms or other marine borers depending on location. Maintenance required regular inspection and replacement of damaged piles, a costly operation that made sterlings increasingly unpopular as concrete and steel became standard in the 19th and 20th centuries. Modern bridge design uses reinforced concrete pile caps and riprap or geotextile scour aprons instead.
The etymology of "sterling" is uncertain, though it may derive from Old English or Scandinavian sources relating to strong or fixed structures. The term appears in medieval English bridge records and remained in use through the Victorian era, particularly in Britain and Northern Europe. Its disappearance from active use reflects the shift from timber to mineral and metal construction methods in hydraulic engineering.
