A container wagon is a rail flatcar engineered to carry standardized shipping containers, typically 20-foot or 40-foot ISO boxes. The wagon bed sits flush or nearly flush with the rail, with corner castings or twist-locks that secure containers at their corner fittings. Most modern container wagons are articulated pairs (piggyback sets), allowing a single locomotive to move two units coupled together, which improves efficiency on long hauls.

The deck itself is usually steel, 2.5 to 3 meters wide, with minimal sides or no sides at all. Weight matters: an empty 20-foot container wagon might weigh 20 to 25 tonnes, leaving room on the axles for a full loaded container (up to 30 tonnes) without exceeding typical rail weight limits of 22.5 tonnes per axle in Europe. Bogies are six-wheel or four-wheel trucks depending on design and operating region. The wagons must comply with both national rail regulations and international interchange standards, particularly the UIC 571 specification for container positioning.

Variants and deployment

Dedicated container services use purpose-built flats with fixed twist-lock arrays; general-purpose freight wagons sometimes carry containers but with less specialized securing infrastructure. Some wagons have adjustable locks to handle non-standard boxes. Double-stack container cars, common in North America, carry two containers vertically and require lower deck height than standard flats. European railways typically use single-stack wagons because clearance limits under bridges and tunnels are tighter.

The name reflects the functional reality: a wagon designed for containers, not a generic platform. In rail yards, these wagons are sorted by container size and destination; mixed loads are avoided because empty runs become uneconomical. Damage occurs chiefly from inadequate locking during braking, which shifts containers laterally, and from corrosion of the steel deck in coastal operations.

Container wagons are central to intermodal rail networks, bridging deep-sea shipping, road haulage, and inland distribution. They do not replace specialized reefer cars or tank wagons, but they have displaced many break-bulk and general-merchandise flatcars since the 1970s. Operating costs favour longer trains and heavier loads, making modern container wagons lighter and stronger than their predecessors.
