A petticoat pipe is a short, flared metal tube that surrounds the blast nozzle (or blastpipe) inside a locomotive's smokebox. Its purpose is to manage the flow of exhaust gases and air around the nozzle, creating a more even draft that pulls gases through the boiler tubes and out the chimney. Without it, exhaust jets from the nozzle would create turbulent pockets of dead air in the smokebox, reducing boiler efficiency and wasting fuel.

The pipe typically has a diameter slightly larger than the nozzle itself and flares outward toward its lower end, resembling the hem of a petticoat, which explains the name. It is usually cast or fabricated from cast iron and sits just below the smokebox tube plate. The gap between the inner wall of the petticoat and the outer surface of the nozzle allows exhaust gases to spread radially before being drawn up through the chimney, instead of forming a tight jet.

Design and variations

Petticoat pipes vary in length and flare angle depending on locomotive type and boiler design. Shorter versions (typically 4 to 8 inches long) are common on freight and mixed-traffic locomotives, while some express passenger engines use longer designs. The internal diameter of the flare is usually between 0.5 and 1.5 inches larger than the nozzle diameter. Some designs feature a stepped or tapered profile rather than a simple conical flare.

A worn or cracked petticoat pipe allows exhaust to bypass the intended flow path, reducing draft and increasing smoke and steam emission from the smokebox door and joints. Replacement requires opening the smokebox and removing the blastpipe assembly, making it a common maintenance task at locomotive depots. Cast iron petticoat pipes are prone to thermal fatigue and corrosion, particularly where condensation collects in the lower smokebox during light steaming.

The petticoat pipe is one of several devices that regulate smokebox dynamics. It works in concert with the blast nozzle size, chimney height, and superheater design to control the rate at which hot gases are drawn through the boiler. Adjusting nozzle diameter was a standard way to alter locomotive performance, and the petticoat pipe's design had to suit each application. On modern preserved steam locomotives, petticoat pipe modifications are sometimes made to improve steaming characteristics without altering the nozzle itself.
