A term generally applied to main-line railways, but this varies from country to country. It has no relation to the weight of the rails used.

heavy rail: the main freight and passenger network

Heavy rail refers to the primary railway network designed for long-distance freight and passenger traffic, distinguished from light rail, commuter rail, and heritage lines by its track gauge, loading capacity, and operational standards. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with the actual weight of the steel rail itself. The term describes the role and scale of the railway system, not its physical construction.

In North America, heavy rail typically means standard-gauge (56.5 inches or 1,435 mm) mainline railways operated by Class I carriers and larger regional operators. These lines handle loaded freight cars of 286,000 pounds or more, with axle loads reaching 32.5 to 36 tons depending on jurisdiction. In Europe and Asia, the definition is looser: some countries classify their national passenger networks as heavy rail even when they are relatively modest in capacity. Britain's Network Rail infrastructure, for instance, is officially designated heavy rail despite carrying mixed traffic at volumes far below American freight tonnages.

Heavy rail infrastructure requires substantial earthwork, concrete or steel bridges, and grade separation at road crossings. Signals and safety systems are typically interlocked wayside apparatus or more modern positive train control systems. Curves are banked and graded to permit speeds of 60 to 125 miles per hour for freight, or 100 to 200 mph for passenger services. The track itself is usually continuously welded rail laid on concrete ties, though jointed rail on timber or concrete ties remains common in older sections and on lightly-trafficked branches.

The operational boundary between heavy and light rail is administrative rather than technical. A light rail line might use the same rail section and ballast, but operates at lower speeds, carries fewer axle tons per vehicle, and follows different signaling rules. Commuter rail occupies a middle ground: it uses heavy-rail-gauge track and infrastructure but lighter rolling stock and often shares tracks with freight operations on heavy-rail mainlines.

The term persists mainly for regulatory and statistical purposes. Transport authorities use it to distinguish mainline operations from urban transit, heritage railways, and industrial sidings. When an engineer or dispatcher refers to heavy rail in conversation, they usually mean the primary network their company operates, whatever its actual specifications.
