cosmoline

A substance obtained from the residues of the distillation of petroleum, essentially the same as vaseline, but of somewhat stiffer consistency, and consisting of a mixture of the higher paraffins.

Cosmoline is a petroleum-derived protective coating made from the heavy residues left after crude oil distillation. It sits between mineral oil and solid paraffin wax in consistency, forming a grease-like substance that adheres to metal surfaces and blocks moisture and oxygen. In mining and extraction work, where equipment sits idle between seasons or during transport, cosmoline serves as a critical barrier against corrosion on drill bits, piping, pump components, and structural steel exposed to humid or salt air environments.

The substance is applied by immersion, spraying, or brush application to clean, dry metal. It hardens into a waxy film that does not drip or run like thin oils, making it practical for vertical surfaces and equipment stored outdoors. Typical application thickness is 0.5 to 2 millimeters. The coating remains effective for months to years depending on climate severity and whether equipment is covered. To put equipment back into service, cosmoline must be removed by solvent washing or heated steam, then the metal cleaned and dried before use.

Cosmoline's stiffness compared to vaseline makes it preferred in heavy industry where thinner greases would migrate from the protected surface or pool in unwanted places. The mixture of higher paraffin hydrocarbons (typically C20 and above) gives it a melting point around 35 to 55 degrees Celsius. In cold climates, it remains pliable enough to absorb minor impacts without cracking off; in hot climates, it softens slightly but does not run. These properties make it borderline suitable for some operating equipment, though long-term use on moving parts causes buildup that can impede function.

Variants and substitutes

Mineral-oil-based versions differ slightly from paraffin-heavy formulations in their water resistance and tackiness. Synthetic alternatives exist but are more expensive. In modern practice, thin hard wax coatings applied electrostatically or as lacquers have replaced cosmoline for some applications, but cosmoline remains standard in mining because it is cheap, reversible (soluble in kerosene or diesel), and effective on rough, pitted surfaces where spray coatings would not adhere evenly.

The name cosmoline has uncertain origin; it may derive from a proprietary brand, though no single manufacturer can now be credited. It is sometimes called "heavy grease" or "rust preventative compound" in specifications, but cosmoline has remained the standard trade term across English-speaking mining and equipment sectors for over a century.
