The rock through which a vein of ore or coal runs.

In mining, country is the host rock that encloses an ore deposit or coal seam. It is the geology you must move, break, or leave behind to reach what you are actually after. A miner drilling into a hillside encounters country rock long before hitting a vein of copper sulphide, and continues cutting through country rock on the other side. The term applies equally to hard rock mining, coal extraction, and underground metalliferous operations.

Country rock takes many forms depending on the local geology. Granite, schist, sandstone, shale, and basalt all commonly serve as country. The specific type matters because it determines how the rock will behave when drilled, blasted, or excavated. Weak country breaks easily but may be unstable; hard country slows drilling and dulls tools but stands firm in an open stope. Some country contains its own minerals of no commercial value, adding weight and volume to waste that must be hauled away.

Country versus ore grade

The boundary between country and ore is rarely sharp. A geologist working on a mining project must define a cutoff grade, below which rock is classified as country rock rather than ore. This threshold depends on the metal price, mining costs, and processing efficiency. The same rock body might be ore at one mine and country at another, depending on economics. Ore stockpiles are therefore separated from country rock stockpiles, though low-grade material near the ore boundary may be stockpiled separately pending price changes.

Country rock disposal is a major operational expense. Open pit mines create waste rock piles; underground operations must hoist country through the same shafts used for ore, consuming capacity and fuel. Some country is used to fill voids left by extraction, reducing surface impact but requiring additional handling. In coal mining, the country strata above and below the seam, known as roof and floor, must be supported or allowed to collapse in a controlled manner as extraction proceeds.

The term itself is British in origin, deriving from the idea of the surrounding geological "country" through which the useful deposit runs. It remains standard vocabulary across English-speaking mining regions and in translated technical literature, though some operations use synonyms like host rock or wall rock depending on context.
