Cotton wax is a plain-weave cotton fabric treated with a coating of paraffin wax or, less commonly, beeswax to create a water-resistant surface. The wax fills the interstices between yarns and sits on the fabric face, reducing moisture penetration without blocking the underlying cotton structure. The result is a stiff, somewhat plastic-feeling cloth that sheds light rain and resists dampness while retaining breathability superior to fully waterproof synthetics.

Wax application typically occurs after weaving through immersion, padding, or spraying, followed by heat-setting to ensure even distribution and adhesion. Paraffin wax dominates industrial use because of its cost and consistency; natural waxes command premiums for heritage products or specialty wear. The fabric weight and weave construction vary widely, from lightweight utility cloths around 150 g/m² to heavier work fabrics exceeding 400 g/m². Weight affects both water resistance and flexibility.

Cotton wax finds steady demand in outdoor workwear, canvas goods, and traditional oilcloth applications where moderate water resistance is acceptable. Waxed canvas jackets, tarps, and bag materials remain standard in certain trades. The fabric develops a pleasing patina as the wax wears and creases, though this also marks the beginning of water-shedding decline. Unlike laminated or coated synthetics, waxed cotton is hand-washable and does not delaminate, making repair and renewal straightforward.

Wax coatings weaken with age and repeated flexing, particularly at fold lines and stress points. Extended exposure to sunlight degrades paraffin through oxidation, turning the surface brittle and dull. The coating may also soften and become tacky in high heat or heavy moisture. Cotton wax lacks the durability of polyurethane or PTFE laminates, which is why it remains confined to applications where moderate, intermittent protection suffices and longevity is measured in seasons rather than years.

The term "cotton wax" reflects the straightforward chemistry: wax applied to cotton. Historical variants include oilcloth (linseed oil-treated fabric) and fustian, which achieved water resistance through dense weaving rather than coating. Modern cotton wax occupies a middle ground between untreated canvas and synthetic technical fabrics, valued for heritage aesthetics, repairability, and environmental profile rather than performance metrics.
