A cottonfield is a cultivated tract of land dedicated to growing cotton plants, Gossypium species, from planting through mechanical or manual harvest. The field layout, soil preparation, and irrigation systems are all engineered to support the plant's 150 to 200 day growing cycle and the equipment needed to work it at scale.
Cotton fields vary widely by region and farming method. In the American South and West, fields typically span hundreds of acres and are worked with wheel tractors carrying rotary hoes, flame cultivators, and mechanical pickers. Rows are usually spaced 30 to 40 inches apart depending on soil type and water availability. In other regions, cotton may be grown on smaller holdings with hand labor. Irrigation is critical in arid zones; flood irrigation, center pivots, and drip systems are all common depending on water cost and soil drainage.
The field itself must be managed for pest pressure, especially boll weevil and bollworm, which are controlled through a mix of insecticide sprays, cultivar selection, and timing of plantings. Weed control begins before planting with burndown herbicides like glyphosate and continues through the season with in-row cultivation and post-emergent sprays. Soil fertility is heavy: cotton removes significant nitrogen and phosphorus, so fields are usually rotated with legumes or wheat, or fertilized annually.
Harvest and field readiness
Cottonfields reach harvest readiness when bolls have opened and fiber moisture is in the 7 to 9 percent range. This typically occurs 4 to 6 weeks after the first flowers appear. Modern mechanical pickers operate most efficiently on fields that are relatively flat, free of stubble and debris from previous crops, and clear of obstacles like rocks or metal that could damage picker spindles. Fields are often trimmed or stalk-knocked before the picker moves through to reduce trash.
The economics and geography of cotton production are tied directly to field characteristics: access to water, frost-free days, soil texture, and proximity to cotton gin facilities. A field's yield can swing 30 to 50 percent based on pest pressure, irrigation timing, and variety selection.
