Narrow work is the excavation of passages, shafts, and cross-cuts with a cross-sectional area typically under 6 square meters, often driven to connect working faces, install ventilation, or provide escape routes in underground mines. Unlike stoping, which removes ore in bulk, narrow work is infrastructure: a miner creates these passages to access the deposit, move air, transport people, or haul broken rock.

The term covers a range of scales. A winze is a narrow vertical or near-vertical shaft sunk from an upper level to a lower one; a raise connects a lower level upward; a cross-cut runs horizontally between two parallel drives. All require similar hand work or small-scale mechanized driving. In coal mines, narrow work includes the initial drift or heading that opens a seam; in hard-rock operations, it describes the development tunnels cut through barren rock to reach ore bodies.

Historically, narrow work was done with hand tools: pick, shovel, and crowbar, with blasting to break the rock. Timber or steel sets supported the walls and roof. Modern narrow work still relies on small pneumatic drills, jumbo drills mounted on light carriers, or hand-held jacklegs, with crews of two to four people. Mucking (loading broken rock) is often done by small shovels or small-scale loaders rather than the large shovels used in stopes.

Ventilation and safety in narrow work

Narrow work creates hazards distinct from open stoping. Low headroom, restricted escape routes, and poor air circulation mean that methane buildup, dust accumulation, and carbon monoxide from diesel engines are serious concerns. Ventilation must be forced through the passage using ductwork or pipe, not left to natural circulation. Roof support matters more in narrow passages because there is nowhere to move if a fall occurs; loose rock or slabby ground requires close attention.

The name reflects practicality: any passage narrow enough that a single piece of equipment or a crew can drive it without massive support infrastructure is narrow work. It is foundational in mining: without it, there are no routes to the ore, no way to ventilate the mine, no escape paths. It is unglamorous work but absolutely essential, and its cost and safety profile drive decisions about mine layout and method from the planning stage onward.
