A crash tender is a heavy-duty firefighting vehicle stationed at airports and airfields, built to respond to aircraft fires and rescue operations. Unlike standard fire trucks, it carries enormous quantities of water and foam concentrates, typically 3,000 to 6,000 gallons or more, along with powerful pumping systems capable of delivering 500 to 2,000 gallons per minute. The vehicle itself must be large enough to reach disabled aircraft quickly across rough terrain, yet maneuverable enough to navigate airport tarmacs and approach burning wreckage without tipping.

The chassis is purpose-built for extreme duty: usually 6-wheel or 8-wheel drive, capable of carrying 30 to 50 tons total weight while maintaining ground clearance. The cab sits high to provide visibility over wreckage, and the vehicle carries a crew of between 4 and 8 firefighters depending on the model. Most modern crash tenders use Class A foam or aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) for hydrocarbon fires, since ordinary water is ineffective against jet fuel. The foam concentrate is stored separately and automatically proportioned into the water stream as it is discharged through turrets, monitors, or hand lines.

Design and positioning

Crash tenders differ from conventional fire trucks in critical ways. They prioritize speed and volume over the ladder equipment and compartmentalization of a city truck. The agent tanks occupy most of the vehicle, leaving minimal space for tools. Many designs include an elevated turret mounted on the roof or chassis, allowing firefighters to spray agent downward onto aircraft fuselages and fuel spills from a distance, reducing exposure to intense heat and hazardous fumes. Some models mount the turret on a rotatable basket, increasing sweep coverage.

These vehicles are stationed under strict regulatory requirements at civilian airports, military air bases, and some industrial sites with helicopter operations. The number and size of crash tenders required depends on airport classification: a small regional airport may have one vehicle, while major international hubs maintain fleets of six or more. Response time standards are severe, typically 3 to 5 minutes from alarm to first water application. This demands that crash tenders remain fueled, staffed, and positioned permanently on or near the airfield.

The term 'crash tender' reflects both its purpose and its British English origin; in North America, the term 'crash rescue vehicle' or 'aircraft rescue and firefighting' (ARFF) vehicle is more common. The word 'tender' itself comes from historical fire service terminology for any mobile firefighting apparatus. Crash tenders represent a specialized sub-discipline within airport operations, sitting at the intersection of civil aviation safety, hazmat response, and structural firefighting.
