A boneyard is a cleared strip of mineral soil, typically 10 to 20 feet wide, created by scraping away all vegetation, organic matter, and topsoil down to exposed earth or rock. It serves as a firebreak in industrial and forestry operations, preventing the spread of ground fires, smouldering materials, or controlled burns by removing the fuel that flames need to travel.

The term originates from the visual appearance of the bare, light-colored mineral soil exposed after scraping, which resembles bleached bone. In forestry, boneyards are standard features around logging operations, lumber mills, and in prescribed burn zones. In mining and quarrying, they mark boundaries where waste material or ore stockpiles might be deposited without risk of igniting surrounding vegetation.

Creating an effective boneyard requires complete removal of duff, organic litter, and roots down to compacted mineral earth. Heavy equipment like dozers or graders does this work, often following contour lines on slopes to maximize effectiveness. Width and maintenance are critical: a boneyard loses function if pine needles, leaves, or other combustible material accumulate on the bare ground within weeks or months.

The boneyard is most valuable in high fire-risk zones where summer heat and low moisture create conditions for rapid fire spread. During prescribed burns or when handling hot materials like fresh slag or cooling coke, placement of such materials on prepared boneyards prevents secondary fires in adjacent timber or brush. In industrial yards handling bituminous coal or charcoal dust, boneyards also contain spillage and limit dust transport into sensitive areas.

Problems arise when boneyards are not maintained or when their location is misjudged relative to wind direction and fuel load. A narrow or partially vegetated firebreak fails in strong wind or high heat intensity. In arid regions with light, drifting soil, boneyards can be re-contaminated by airborne organic matter; in wet climates, they require periodic re-scraping. Cost and land use trade-offs mean boneyards are reserved for high-risk zones rather than applied universally.
