A fire cabinet is a locked or glazed wall-mounted enclosure that holds portable firefighting equipment, usually a fire extinguisher, fire blanket, and sometimes a hose reel or first aid kit. The standard cabinet measures roughly 600 mm wide by 800 mm tall by 200 mm deep, though dimensions vary. It is mounted at eye level (typically 1.2 to 1.5 metres from floor) in visible locations along escape routes, near high-risk areas like kitchens or electrical rooms, and in commercial and industrial buildings where regulation requires it.

The cabinet door may be solid metal with a key lock, or glazed (tempered glass) with a push-to-break mechanism. Glazed doors allow quick visual confirmation of contents and eliminate the need for keys during emergencies; breaking the glass triggers an audible alarm on some models. Solid-door cabinets suit theft-prone locations. The interior is typically painted bright red or yellow and contains mounting brackets or clips to hold extinguishers and equipment securely against vibration or rough handling.

Standards and placement

In Europe, fire cabinets fall under EN 3-7 (for surface-mounted cabinets) and must display a red square or red triangle with a white background at least 400 mm square. The cabinet itself is not rated for fire resistance; it is a storage and access device only. Building codes in most jurisdictions mandate fire cabinets in specific occupancies: offices above a certain floor count, warehouses, food service areas, and manufacturing plants. The cabinet contents are legally required to match the hazard class of the space, so a chemical store will stock different extinguisher types than an office building.

Common failure points include corroded locks (from humidity or sea salt spray in coastal plants), doors that jam due to impact or misalignment, and absence of regular inspection tags. Many operators neglect to replace or refill equipment after use or after the expiry date printed on extinguishers. In industrial settings, vibration from nearby machinery can loosen door hinges if cabinets are not securely bolted to walls.

The fire cabinet differs from a fire station (a small modular structure containing hoses and pumps) and from a sprinkler riser cupboard (which houses water supply valves). It is the entry-level visible emergency response asset in any building and often the first resource reached during the critical first minute of a small fire. Its effectiveness depends entirely on staff training and regular maintenance audits, not on the cabinet design itself.
