Crocking occurs when dye or pigment transfers from a textile, leather, or coated surface onto another material through friction or abrasion. This happens during manufacturing, finishing, storage, handling, or in customer use. The transferred color stains whatever touches it: adjacent fabrics in a roll, packaging, machinery rollers, or in a garment's case, a wearer's skin or other clothing. It is a defect that damages product quality and customer satisfaction.

The mechanism is straightforward: loose or weakly bonded dye molecules sit on the fiber surface rather than being fully fixed to the polymer chain. Moisture, heat, soap, or abrasion loosens them further. Dark colors, particularly deep reds and blacks, are most prone to crocking because achieving saturation often requires higher dye loading. Reactive dyes, vat dyes, and disperse dyes all crock if the dyeing process is incomplete or if the final fixing and washing steps fail to lock the color in place.

Testing and Mitigation

The crock test is standardized (AATCC 8, ISO 105 X12): a rubbing cloth is drawn across the dyed sample under defined pressure and repeated strokes. The resulting stain on the test cloth is compared to a gray scale. Results range from 1 (severe) to 5 (none). Textile producers and dyers aim for 4 or 5 for consumer-facing products. Mitigation involves extended hot-water washing and rinsing after dyeing, use of fixing agents or mordants, and selection of dyes with better substantivity on the fiber being used.

In manufacturing, crocking becomes visible when finished goods are rolled, folded, or stacked. Poor warehouse ventilation and high humidity worsen it. Some spinners and weavers apply anti-crock finishes: these include wax, resin, or silicone-based coatings that seal the surface temporarily. They must be durable enough to survive handling but removable in the customer's first wash.

The term crock itself has older textile roots, possibly linked to the pottery term for an earthenware pot or to the sense of rubbing away. In modern trade, crocking is a line-item defect in quality agreements and a reason for returns or credits. It remains one of the most common complaints in dyehouses because it requires precision across multiple process steps: fiber preparation, dye selection, temperature and time control, and final treatment.
