Shingling is a hot-metal working process that removes brittle oxides, cinder, and entrapped impurities from wrought iron or steel. A craftsman takes a roughly shaped bloom or billet, heats it to around 1200 degrees Celsius, then strikes it repeatedly with a heavy hammer or power hammer while applying lateral pressure. This combination of impact and squeeze forces the unwanted material out of the iron, compacting the remaining sound metal and improving its workability and strength.

The process dates from the era of puddled iron production, when pig iron was converted to wrought iron in reverberatory furnaces and emerged as a pasty, impure mass. Shingling was the practical answer to making that material fit for further shaping. A worker would place the hot bloom on an anvil or shingling block, hammer it in overlapping strokes to compress it, then fold it, heat it again, and repeat. Each cycle drove out more impurities and consolidated the iron.

Modern context and variants

Although traditional puddling and shingling have largely vanished in industrial nations, the principle persists in rolling mills and forging shops. In modern practice, similar consolidation occurs during heavy forging under hydraulic presses or trip hammers. The term itself survives in mill terminology, sometimes applied to the initial rough forging or working stages of steel blooms destined for rods, rails, or structural sections. Some foundries and specialty forges still perform hand-shingling on small batches to produce ultra-clean stock for critical applications.

The work is physically demanding and requires judgment about temperature and timing. Cool the workpiece too much and it becomes brittle; overheat it and it burns. Careless shingling leaves laminations and seams that weaken the finished product. The hammer blows must be deliberate and overlapping to ensure even compaction across the face of the billet.

The name likely derives from the overlapping, scaled appearance the billet takes on after repeated hammer strokes, or from the shingle-like flakes of oxide and waste that are expelled. In older technical literature, shingling is sometimes called welding when it closes internal voids, or drawing when it elongates the stock. Modern metallurgists recognize shingling as a form of hot-working consolidation, similar in effect to the squeeze phase of a forging press cycle.
