To meas is to measure, typically during manufacturing or quality control work. The abbreviation appears on process sheets, inspection forms, and equipment specifications where space is tight or speed matters. A technician might be told to meas the bore diameter of a machined casting, or to meas temperatures across a production run. It compresses "measure" into three letters for handwritten notes, digital tick boxes, and abbreviated work instructions.

The term appears most often in metalworking, plastics molding, and assembly environments where dimensional accuracy or performance verification is routine. Machinists meas tolerances with calipers or micrometers; molders meas part weight or wall thickness; quality inspectors meas against specification limits. It also appears in maintenance logs: "meas bearing temperature before shutdown." The abbreviation saves time in high-volume operations where the same actions repeat shift after shift.

Context determines what gets measured and how. A fabricator might meas with a ruler or tape for rough work; a precision shop uses dial calipers, micrometers, or coordinate measuring machines. A process technician might meas flow rate, pressure, or temperature with instruments mounted on the line itself. In each case, the goal is identical: to capture a value and compare it against a known standard or limit.

Meas appears frequently in nonconformance reports and deviation investigations. When a part fails, the first action is often "meas suspect dimension" to determine whether the deviation is real or instrument error. It also shows up in setup verification: a machine operator meas a first-piece part before running a batch. The word carries an implication of accountability, since taking and recording measurements creates a documented trail.

The abbreviation is informal enough that formal quality documents often spell out "measure" in full, but shop floor culture, digital work orders, and quick reference cards favor "meas." It sits alongside other compressed verbs like "spec," "check," and "verify," part of the shorthand that allows experienced workers to parse instructions and notes at a glance without losing meaning.
