Any of the marks placed at the corners of a form to indicate where the page is to be trimmed.

A cropmark is a fine line printed in the margin of a press sheet, positioned at the corners or edges of the intended final page size. It serves as a visual target for the guillotine operator or automated cutting equipment, showing exactly where the printed material must be severed to produce the finished trim size. Cropmarks are essential in multi-up printing, where several copies of a page are imposed on a single large sheet and then separated after printing.

Cropmarks typically extend 3 to 6 millimeters beyond the trim boundary, positioned just outside the bleed area. They are printed in a color that contrasts with the substrate, most commonly black or a registration color. In digital workflow, cropmarks are added at the imposition stage, before the printing plate is created. They should never appear within the visible printed area of the finished product; they exist only on the waste margin that will be discarded.

Setup and use in production

On a guillotine or rotary trimmer, the operator aligns the sheet so the cropmarks line up with the blade or cutting head. On modern finishing equipment, optical sensors or digital registration systems detect the cropmarks automatically, ensuring repeatable cuts within tight tolerances. Misaligned cropmarks lead to uneven trim, wastage, and customer complaints. This is why cropmarks must be placed with precision during the design and imposition phase.

Cropmarks differ from trim marks (which may also include fold lines or bleed warnings) and from registration marks (which align color separations). A single sheet may carry all three types of guide marks. Bleeds, which extend content beyond the trim boundary to prevent white edges after cutting, rely on cropmarks to define where that bleed is actually removed.

In offset and flexographic printing, cropmarks are part of the film artwork or digital plate data. In digital printing systems, they may be generated by the RIP software or manually specified in the print file. Incorrect cropmark placement, missing cropmarks, or marks placed inside the trim boundary are common prepress errors that can halt a job or force costly rework at the finishing stage.
