Underprint is a technique in offset and flexographic printing where lighter colored inks, typically cyan, magenta, and yellow, are applied to the substrate before the black ink layer. The black ink then prints on top of this colored foundation. The result is a richer, deeper black than pure black ink alone can produce, while simultaneously protecting the paper from the excessive water and ink saturation that would result from laying down solid black at full density.

The primary purpose is to avoid the mechanical and chemical stress of over-saturation. Paper has a limit to how much ink and moisture it can absorb without degrading its dimensional stability, surface finish, or structural integrity. When a large solid black area prints, the traditional approach of using only black ink requires very heavy ink coverage. This saturates the paper fibers and can cause cockling, excessive show-through on the reverse side, or delayed drying. By underprinting with lighter colors first, the black ink layer sits on a pre-filled substrate, requiring less total ink volume.

The underprint layer typically uses 60 to 80 percent of the normal ink density for those colors, with black then applied at reduced strength on top. Common underprint combinations include a mix of all three process colors (CMY), or sometimes just cyan and magenta. The exact recipe depends on the desired final black tone. A warmer black may use more magenta in the underprint; a cooler black might emphasize cyan. The ink traps must be carefully managed during press setup, as the underprint colors must dry sufficiently before black overprints, or excessive ink transfer and dot gain occur.

Where underprint fits in the workflow

Underprint is specified during color separation and prepress. The digital file is analyzed to identify solid black areas and large black text or graphics, then the separation software generates separate plates or channels for the underprint colors and the black layer. On press, this means additional units running on a multi-color press, or a second pass through a smaller press. It requires careful registration, especially for text; any misalignment between the underprint and black layers will cause haloing or color fringing that ruins the appearance.

Underprint is most common in offset printing of packaging, books, and large-format commercial work where color fidelity and paper preservation matter. It is less necessary in digital printing, where smaller ink volumes are the default. On coated papers, underprint reduces the risk of ink strike-through and improves color uniformity across the sheet. The technique is invisible to the reader, but its absence becomes obvious when black areas show water marks, drying delays, or that telltale thin, flat black that lacks depth.
