Cutinite is a maceral, one of the microscopically distinct organic components that make up coal. It forms from the waxy, protective outer layer (cuticle) of terrestrial plants that accumulated in ancient peat deposits. Under the microscope, cutinite appears as a distinctive liptinite component with characteristic yellow or orange fluorescence under UV light, and it has a notably lower reflectance than the vitrinite that often surrounds it.
The material originates from plant leaves, stems, and seeds whose cuticles were preserved during peatification and subsequent coalification. Because cuticles are composed largely of cutin, a waxy polymer resistant to decomposition, they survive better than most plant tissues in the anaerobic depositional environment. This relative resistance to decay means cutinite can accumulate in measurable quantities in certain coal seams, particularly those derived from lowland peat swamps dominated by woody or herbaceous flora.
Identification and occurrence
Petrographers identify cutinite by its optical properties under reflected light microscopy: it fluoresces distinctly bright yellow or orange-yellow, is very low in reflectance (typically 0.3 to 0.5 percent), and often displays sharp boundaries against darker vitrinite components. Cutinite abundance varies widely across coal deposits and seams. Coals derived from plant-dominated source material may contain 5 to 15 percent cutinite by maceral composition, while other seams contain almost none. Its presence indicates a depositional environment where plant cuticles were preserved in the original peat.
Cutinite matters commercially because it affects coal properties and processing behavior. Coals rich in liptinite macerals like cutinite tend to be softer, more friable, and lower in ash yield than vitrinite-dominated coals. This influences grinding and combustion characteristics in power generation and influences the liquid products obtained during coal-tar distillation in coke production. Cutinite can also indicate the botanical origin and paleoenvironment of ancient peat accumulations, making it valuable for coal petrology and paleobotanical reconstruction.
