A drawer is an underground worker in coal or metal mines whose job is to move loaded tubs or trams from the working face to the pit bottom or to a main haulage road. The drawer either pushes the tub by hand or, on steeper gradients, hauls it using a rope and harness attached to their body. This work formed the backbone of pit labour for centuries, particularly in British coal mines, where drawers operated on gradients too steep or too irregular for ponies or mechanical haulage to work reliably.
The physical setup is straightforward but brutal. A drawer fastens a chain or hemp rope to a leather belt or harness across the chest and waist, then leans into the pull, walking backwards or forwards depending on the gradient and rail geometry. On gentler slopes, pushing was faster; on sharper inclines, pulling was necessary. Tubs carried anything from 1 to 3 tons of coal or ore depending on the seam depth and local custom. A skilled drawer might shift 8 to 10 tubs per shift, though the actual tonnage moved depended on distance travelled and the state of the track.
The term was most common in British mining, particularly in South Wales, Lancashire, and Scotland through the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. It was one of the hardest and lowest-paid positions in the colliery, often filled by children, women, and older men. Drawers worked in teams, with the strongest at the front and younger workers behind to help, especially on difficult stretches. The rope or chain frequently broke or tangled, creating delays and danger.
Variants and decline
Some mines distinguished between the drawer (who moved tubs on the working seam) and the driver or trammer (who worked the main haulage roads), though the terms overlapped badly. In some pits, especially where ventilation or gradient allowed, ponies replaced human drawers by the mid-1800s. By the 1960s, mechanical conveyors and continuous miners had made the role obsolete in most developed mines, though drawers worked in small and deep pits well into the late twentieth century in some regions.The drawer's job defined the physical layout and economics of a pit. The density of drawers, their routing, and their speed determined how much coal could be won. Poor track maintenance, wet conditions, and badly designed tubs all hit output directly through drawer fatigue and accidents. Injuries from crushed feet, hernias, and spinal damage were routine. The term itself is neutral and occupational, simply from the verb to draw, but it carries the weight of generations of dangerous, underpaid labour that underlay industrialisation.
