CCS2: the European standard EV fast-charging connector

CCS2, formally the Combined Charging System Combo 2, is a single connector that handles both AC and DC charging on a single vehicle inlet. It combines a Type 2 AC charging interface (the standard European socket) with two additional DC power contacts beneath it, allowing a single port to accept slow AC charging from a wallbox or fast DC charging from a public rapid charger. This dual functionality eliminates the need for separate inlets and has become the de facto standard across Europe and increasingly elsewhere.

The connector itself is a seven-pin system: five pins for three-phase AC power and neutral, plus two large DC pins capable of handling up to 350 kW or more in current designs. The DC contacts are oversized to manage the high current densities required for battery charging in under 20 minutes. A communication line between car and charger (the CAN bus) negotiates voltage, current, and thermal management in real time. Maximum DC voltage in typical installations is 1000 V, with 800 V battery systems becoming standard in premium vehicles to reduce charging time further.

CCS2 deployment divides the world: Europe, China, and many other markets mandate it, while North America favors the NACS standard. Within Europe, most public fast chargers now ship with CCS2 connectors. Vehicle manufacturers have converged on it, though some legacy models still carry the older Type 2 AC-only inlet alongside a proprietary DC socket. The connector's robustness in outdoor conditions and its integration of safety signalling (pilot contact, ground pins) make it reliable in European weather and continuous public use.

Common issues in the field include thermal stress on the contacts during high-power charging; charger cables can weigh 20 kg or more when water-cooled, straining the latch mechanism. Connection cleanliness matters: mineral deposits on the DC pins degrade contact resistance and cause voltage drop. Some vehicles implement a mechanical interlock that prevents driving away with a charging cable attached, which can catch inexperienced users; this is a safety feature, not a fault.

The naming reflects its history: CCS is a joint initiative between European automakers and CharIN (Charging Interface Initiative), whereas CCS1 refers to the earlier combined AC/DC system used in North America and Japan. CCS2 is the European variant, standardized under IEC 62196-3. Its adoption was rapid once battery electric vehicles became commercially viable around 2015; today it is so entrenched that alternative charging standards in Europe are increasingly relegated to legacy vehicles or specialist applications.
