Cymogene is a mixture of highly volatile hydrocarbons, primarily propane and propylene, separated from the lightest fraction of crude oil distillate. It exists as a gas at room temperature but liquefies under moderate pressure or refrigeration. In mining and extraction work, cymogene was valued for its ability to produce temperatures well below zero Celsius, making it useful for equipment cooling and certain metallurgical processes.
The liquid boils at around negative 40 degrees Celsius at atmospheric pressure, which was significantly lower than the achievable temperatures from ammonia or other common refrigerants of its era. When allowed to evaporate, cymogene absorbs substantial latent heat, making it effective for flash cooling applications where rapid temperature reduction was needed without chemical interaction with the material being cooled.
Practical use and limitations
Cymogene saw particular application in assaying and metallurgical laboratories within mining operations, where precise low temperatures were required for testing ore properties or refining processes. Its extreme volatility was both an advantage and a liability: it required heavy, sealed containers and careful handling because any leak meant rapid evaporation and loss of effectiveness. Storage was expensive and hazardous.
The term fell from common use as synthetic refrigerants with better thermal properties, lower cost, and improved safety profiles became available in the early twentieth century. Ammonia and later chlorofluorocarbons offered superior heat transfer and more reliable containment. Cymogene was never widely adopted outside specialized mining and laboratory settings, and industrial refrigeration moved decisively away from petroleum distillate products.
The name derives from the Greek for "cold-generating." Historical references to cymogene are now primarily encountered in older mining texts and equipment catalogs, making it more a vocabulary artifact of industrial history than an active trade term in modern extraction operations.
