In underground mining, a flat is a near-horizontal mineral vein or ore body that branches off from a steeply inclined main vein. Unlike the primary vein which may dip at 60 degrees or steeper, a flat typically runs at angles less than 20 degrees from horizontal. Miners encounter flats as lateral extensions that follow bedding planes, fracture zones, or contacts between rock types, and they often contain economic ore worthy of extraction even though they deviate from the main pay streak.
The distinction matters operationally. A steeply dipping vein allows gravity to assist ore movement down chutes and declines; a flat requires different hauling methods. Flats may be worked by driving nearly horizontal drifts (galleries) into the surrounding country rock, or by opening them up through raises driven upward from lower levels. The ore grade in a flat can equal or exceed that of the main vein, making them important targets in mine planning, though their gentle angle means they often carry more waste rock and require more selective mining.
Recognition and nomenclature
Flats are identified during exploration drilling and underground mapping as the vein dips toward horizontal. The term reflects honest geology: a "flat" vein simply lies flat. Related terms include "footwall flat" (a flat running along the lower contact of an inclined vein) and "hanging wall flat" (along the upper contact). Flats should not be confused with blanket deposits, which are tabular ore bodies not connected to a main vein, nor with bedded orebodies, which are primary sedimentary features rather than secondary vein extensions.
Mining engineers must account for flats in reserve estimates and mine design. A rich flat may justify deepening a shaft or extending underground infrastructure beyond what the main vein alone would justify. Conversely, a barren flat is often left in place and worked around, because the cost of extraction and haulage exceeds recovered value. In mature operations with detailed geological models, flats become routine targets; in exploration and development phases, they can be overlooked if drilling is angled to intersect steeply dipping structures preferentially.
