The composition of dairy cake varies by intended production level and regional feeding standards, but most formulations contain 16 to 20 percent crude protein, supplemented with grains (barley, maize, oats), legume meals (soybean, rapeseed), minerals (calcium, phosphorus), and trace elements (cobalt, copper, iodine, selenium). Some products include bypass protein sources such as fish meal or protected amino acids, which resist rumen degradation and reach the small intestine for direct absorption. The binder holding these ingredients together is typically molasses or a small amount of added fat, which also improves palatability.

Dairy farmers feed cake as a concentrate during milking or alongside silage and hay, using it to boost energy intake when forage quality is poor or during peak lactation. Typical daily allowances range from 2 to 8 kg per cow, depending on milk yield and forage quality; high-yielding herds receiving 30 liters or more per day consume more cake than lower-producing animals. The product is stored in cool, dry conditions to prevent mold growth and nutrient degradation, especially in humid climates where moisture absorption can damage the pressed cake structure.

The term "cake" originates from the traditional pressing of oilseeds to extract oil, leaving behind a compressed solid residue called oilcake. Modern dairy cake extends this concept to mixed grain and protein formulations pressed or extruded into solid form, distinguishing it from meal (loose powder) and from grains fed whole. The word "dairy" specifies that the formula targets lactating cattle, not beef animals, young stock, or other livestock classes.

Dairy cake sits within the broader category of manufactured feeds, competing with or complementing other concentrates such as protein blocks, molasses blocks, and straight grains.
