A feller-buncher is a self-propelled forestry machine that combines three functions into one operator station: it cuts trees at the base, gathers multiple stems together, and lays them down in organized bunches on the forest floor. The machine typically weighs 35,000 to 50,000 pounds and runs on rubber tires or tracked undercarriage, allowing it to move under its own power through harvested areas without external assistance.

The cutting head sits at the end of a hydraulic boom and rotates 360 degrees. Most heads use a circular saw or shear mechanism that severs the tree at ground level; the gripper arms then hold the felled stem and accumulate additional trees as the boom swings. Once a sufficient bundle forms (typically 4 to 12 trees depending on species and stem size), the machine releases the bunch onto the ground in a neat row aligned for skidding or forwarding operations downstream.

Variants and deployment

Feller-bunchers are sized to match timber type and terrain. Small models operate in mixed hardwood stands where trees may average 40 to 60 feet tall and 8 to 14 inches diameter; larger units work softwood plantations with uniform, tall trees. Tracked versions handle steep slopes and wet ground; wheeled versions cover flatter, more stable terrain faster. Some machines run parallel to contours to minimize soil disturbance in ecologically sensitive areas.

The machine reduces labor intensity compared to hand felling with chainsaws and manual yarding. One operator completes what historically took a crew of two to four people and a full working day. Production rates range from 12 to 25 trees per hour depending on terrain, tree size, and operator skill. The organized bunches that emerge also reduce downstream processing time for limbing and bucking crews.

Feller-bunchers wear rapidly in abrasive conditions. The gripper pads erode after 3,000 to 6,000 operating hours; hydraulic hoses rupture from friction and impacts; and the boom pins loosen under cyclic stress. Operator fatigue and poor visibility around the boom contribute to snags and accidents. In rocky or stumpy ground, the undercarriage components and tire sidewalls sustain damage that forces unexpected downtime.
