A long object, often a timber or log, buried to serve as an anchor for a wall or for stays.

A deadman is a substantial object, typically a timber, concrete block, or steel beam, buried in the ground to act as an anchor point. It resists pulling forces from temporary or permanent structures above, most commonly retaining walls, sheet pile walls, and bracing systems. The deadman works by sheer weight and soil friction, exploiting the mass of earth above and around it to prevent uplift or lateral movement.

In wall bracing, cables or rods run from the wall back to the deadman at an angle, usually between 30 and 45 degrees from horizontal. This geometry distributes the tension load as both a downward and backward force. For a timber deadman bracing a trench wall, a log 12 to 24 inches in diameter and 8 to 16 feet long, laid perpendicular to the direction of pull, is common. Concrete deadmen are poured in place; steel channels or H-beams serve in temporary shoring systems where deadmen must be recovered and reused.

Soil conditions matter hugely

The holding capacity of any deadman depends on soil type and depth. In dense clay or compacted fill, friction develops quickly and the deadman need not be buried as deeply. In loose sand or silt, a greater burial depth and larger mass are required to mobilize enough soil weight. A deadman placed near the surface is nearly useless; practical minimum burial is often 4 to 6 feet for retaining wall work, depending on load and soil.

The term reflects its function: it is dead weight, inert and immobilized, pressed into service as a static counterweight. Unlike a pile, which is driven, or a helical anchor, which is twisted in, a deadman relies entirely on gravity and bearing against undisturbed earth. It is economical where space permits and soil is suitable, but excavation and backfill labour are significant costs.

Failures occur when deadmen are placed too shallow, when soil is disturbed or replaced with fill that has not settled, or when the angle of pull is misjudged and the object lifts or rotates. Professional practice requires soil investigation, load calculation, and often witnessing by an engineer. Temporary deadmen in trenching must be removed and the hole backfilled and compacted to restore safe soil conditions.
