A decagram is a unit of mass within the SI system, equal to exactly 10 grams or 0.01 kilograms. Its symbol is dag, though it sees far less practical use than the gram or kilogram units that bracket it. In everyday metrology and industrial settings, you will almost never encounter the decagram as a standard measurement unit, yet it remains part of the official SI hierarchy and appears in conversion tables and older technical specifications.

The decagram sits at an awkward position in the metric scale. The gram handles small components and powders; the kilogram covers bulk materials and finished goods. At 10 grams, the decagram falls between these workhorses and offers little advantage in either direction. A food processor might weigh spice batches in grams; a shipping department weighs pallets in kilograms. Few processes naturally organize around the 10-gram threshold, which explains why this unit has remained marginal since the metric system's formalization.

Where it appears

The decagram does turn up in older European pharmaceutical and chemical documentation, particularly in German and French technical standards from the mid-20th century. Some laboratory balance scales include dag markings on their dials, though modern digital scales typically skip this denomination entirely. Agricultural and spice trade documentation occasionally references decagrams, especially in bulk ingredient specifications. Conversion charts and SI reference tables list it for completeness, but few working metrologists reach for it voluntarily.

The name follows standard SI prefix logic: deca- means ten, so a decagram is simply ten grams. The prefix hierarchy itself is Latin-derived and consistent across all SI units of measurement. However, the decagram's redundancy within the metric system has gradually eroded its use, making it today primarily a historical artifact and a teaching example of why some metric units survive while others fade from practice.
