A decakatal (dakal) is a unit expressing the rate at which a catalyst accelerates a chemical reaction. It represents ten katals, where one katal equals one mole of substrate converted per second. In industrial settings, decakatals describe enzyme activity, bioreactor performance, and catalytic converter throughput. The unit bridges laboratory biochemistry and large-scale chemical engineering where reaction rates must be quantified precisely for process control and validation.

The katal itself emerged from the need to separate catalytic activity from reaction rate. A catalyst enables transformation without being consumed; its activity describes how many moles per second it can process regardless of substrate concentration or reaction conditions. Ten katals therefore represents a substantial catalytic capacity, making the decakatal practical for industrial enzymes, biological treatment systems, and heterogeneous catalysis applications where single-katal scales would yield unwieldy decimal notation.

Wastewater treatment plants measure enzyme dosing in decakatals. Pharmaceutical manufacturing specifies fermentation bioreactors by their decakatal output. Petrochemical cracking units characterize zeolite catalysts in decakatal terms. The unit appears in technical specifications, equipment validation, and quality assurance documentation whenever catalytic throughput must be declared to regulatory authorities or process engineers.

Confusion sometimes arises because reaction rate (moles per second under specific conditions) differs from catalytic activity (the intrinsic capacity to catalyze). A 5 dakal enzyme working at 50 percent efficiency in one reactor may show lower output than a 2 dakal enzyme operating at full capacity in another. Decakatals measure potential, not actual production.

The term derives from metric convention: deca- means ten, and katal comes from the Greek word for decompose. ISO 80000-9 established the katal in 1992 as the SI unit for catalytic activity, making decakatal a straightforward metric multiple. Most industries still cite katals rather than decakatals, but when handling high-activity systems, industrial fermentation, large-scale biocatalysis, waste treatment at municipal scale, the decakatal provides readable numbers without scientific notation.
